Somewhere in our minds, between the "He was a good man" and the "God bless him..." lie our memories. Every last one. Even the ones we cannot remember right now. But where do you really learn about someone? Would you believe a funeral? People you may have never met, who knew your grandmom, grandad, or even your own parents. You'll hear stories about the things they used to do,people and places that you only heard about, that were actually true. Now, let's fast forward to the future... What would a memorial service inf the future look like?

In the future, there is a chip that's available to be implanted in the brain of a fetus, which will record everything it does. When it gets old enough - like their 21st birthday, the parents tell their child that they have a Zoe Implant, and everything is being recorded. When they die, their children will be able to see what it was like for them growing up, and everytime with them. Yep, all of those fun, happy times.
Enter Alan Hakman, played supurbly by Robin Williams, who is a Cutter. A Cutter is someone who siphons the memories of your recently departed and turns them in to a "Rememory"... the memorial service of the future.

There is a code for the Cutters as well. A Cutter cannot share what they learn with others. They can't sell, or take advantage of what they see. They also cannot meld footage together for a final complete file, and a Cutter cannot be the recipient of a Zoe Implant. Basically, the Cutter is the editor of your life. If you were always in trouble with the police, and what have you, upon your death, the assigned Cutter would remove those bits, and paint your life in a different light. All of this, gleefully provided by Eye-Tech Corporation. Now, society being what it is, there are those who oppose this technology, and get tattoos that block the implants from seeing and hearing anything. Like so many picket signs in the movie: "My Memories are MY Memories".

This is where everything starts to head South. Alan meets up with friends, to find out that one of Eye-Techs own top execs has passed away, and Alan (being the best Cutter in the business) is in line to get the job. Others from his past will come to try and thwart Alan's efforts. And for Alan there's a part of his own life in this project! Can Alan get this project done, and learn more about himself in the process? Get it and see!
I have to say, that I've read quite a lot of bad reviews of this movie, and I have to disagree. I thought this movie was well thought out. and the cast did wonderfully. This was a "thinker", not a suspense in the traditional sense of the word. One where it's almost obvious, and that fact alone causes one to think about a lot of personal issues. Privacy - becoming a rare commodity. The fact that the Cutter, who, reaches a deity-like status, knows your deepest, darkest, secrets, and yet organizes your lifes greatest moments, and displays them for all to see. Interesting, and very thought provoking... |
